Gas Access Campaign

The Gas Access Campaign has been launched to save lives by allowing social landlords legal access to carry out annual gas safety checks to ensure gas appliances are working safely and correctly.

The law states gas appliances and flues in rented properties must be checked by a Gas Safe registered engineer every 12 months.  However, the law does not allow social landlords a swift and efficient way to ensure the check takes place.  It can take four months of legal process to allow the the landlord access to the property in order to carry out a gas check.

The solution is to give Housing Associations the same access as the Local Authority who can check gas services by accessing properties using a warrant issued by the Magistrates Court on the day they apply for access.  This ensures tenants are kept safe within their homes.  More information on the legal terms can be found here.

The Gas Access Campaign is bringing together leaders from within the sector and further afield to make the case more forcefully.  By changing the law social landlords will be able to make sure each person living in affordable housing are kept safe in homes with gas appliances.
